Choose a laptop by starting with the use case, not the spec sheet. Decide what you will do on it daily, set a budget, then spend on the parts you touch every hour — screen, keyboard, and battery — before chasing processor numbers. Most buyers need enough RAM and a good display far more than a faster chip.

That order matters because laptop marketing runs the other way round. Product pages lead with processor generations and graphics model names, because those are the numbers that justify a higher price. Graphics. Integrated graphics handle everything except gaming, 3D work, and serious video editing. A discrete GPU adds cost, weight, heat, and battery drain — buy one only for a named reason.

Battery. Rated hours come from manufacturer testing under gentle conditions; real-world life is typically well below the claim. Compare battery capacity in watt-hours as a sanity check, and weight the reviews that test realistic workloads.

Ports. Check for what you actually plug in. Many thin laptops now charge over USB-C and drop the dedicated charger port — useful, but only if you understand that USB-C cables are not interchangeable and that the wrong one will charge slowly or not at all.

Where do people waste money on laptops?
